Our current understanding of the oceans is the result of marine scientific research conducted over the past few decades. This activity, governed by contemporary law of the sea, has provided information that enables us to better utilize the ocean’s living and non-living resources and to address the problems facing the marine environment. The international dissemination of the results of marine scientific research has succeeded in generating greater global attention to the state of the seas and the actions needed to ensure their well-being.
In accordance with the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea, scientific research focuses on the marine environment. This explains why it can be argued that there is a connection between such research and the protection of the marine environment. Without marine research, we would lack information on the effects of pollution in the sea, climate change, rising sea levels, as well as the risks facing marine biodiversity. At the same time, the growing body of scientific data on the seas enables the development of strategies aimed at combating the threats affecting them. The constant increase in scientific information poses challenges for States regarding the most appropriate regulations to defend their interests at sea.
